May 06, 2007· The Smithy is very light weight and expensive for a machine of it's size. The tail stocks on most 3-1 are laughable. The mill portion is light and lacks enough spindle speed range. The table is small for most clamp work. It is nearly as easy to just add something to the tool post and use the lathe spindle to turn milling bits.

I had also noted that if you have room, you can get the BZ-239, and a small mill, both with the same capacity as the big combo machine, for a little more money than the combo.

The biggest shortcoming of the 3 in 1 machines is the constant setting up and breaking down set-ups from lathe to mill or vice versa. Right now I have my machine set-up for a milling job with the mill vise indicated in.

Just go buy a used American made lathe and Seperate American made Mill.
